Isao Takahata does not get as much credit as Miyazaki for his strong female characters, especially considering how, unlike Miyazaki’s characters, Takahata’s girls and women exist within the bounds of our society. His 1991 anime Only Yesterday revolves around a similarly strong female character, Taeko. She is a 27-year-old Tokyo ‘salary woman’ who is taking a summer vacation, and through a series of flashbacks, we get to alternate between her current situation and her perspective as a ten-year-old.

What I Want the Average Movie Experience To Be – A Review of The Power of The Dog
So I was watching The Power of the Dog the other day and to be honest I did not love it. But despite this, I had a wonderful time watching it! The viewing experience was really pleasant. And it sort of made me wonder how nice it would be if the whole average movie experience would feel like this.

Unless you’re living under a rock (which I hope you’re not, wouldn’t be comfortable), you’ve heard of the Demon Slayer series. Adapted from the manga of the same name, the series has been the new glorious thing to come out of Japan. It had been popular enough on its own, but the Mugen Train movie seems to have helped it reach a new high.

Best Fictional Characters Across All Media
Rodion Raskolnikov, Crime and Punishment
Talking about Dostoyevsky’s characters, David Foster Wallace said that the best characters “live inside us, forever, once we’ve met them.” And Rodion Raskolnikov is one of the most complex and unique characters that he has ever created.

1. Tarzan (1999)
I remember watching this movie on a VHS tape. Back then, we rented most of the VHS tapes and owned very few of them. My brother and I watched this movie almost daily – which is probably why my parents decided to just pay up and let us keep it.
The tape sadly met its end from my hand when I accidentally put a hot iron on top of it as I was ironing my school uniform (moral of the story being – do not let a seven-year-old iron their own clothes). To be honest, I haven’t re-watched this movie since, and I am not even sure I would like it as much as I did back then.

If you are looking for something new for your to-watch list of Christmas Movies let me recommend the late Satoshi Kon’s most light-hearted and magical movie Tokyo Godfathers. This movie follows three “wise” men in the form of three homeless Japanese people who find a little bundle of miracle abandoned during Christmas Eve and spend the whole movie trying to unite the baby to its parents.

I am not a Kaufman fan to be honest. But his movies are always an experience regardless of whether I like them or not. Plus, I like the fact that he does not care whether anyone likes his movies at all. And as he makes movies so sparsely, I always find myself awaiting all of his releases eagerly.

As most of the summer is going by with most of us still locked indoors, I have been getting my fill of the summer aesthetic by watching films that feel like summer. So here is a list of sunny, happy, and relaxed movies with summertime vibes that I hope you guys will enjoy as well.
Hold Me Like A Mother Would – The Before Trilogy Then & Now
It has been 26 years since Before Sunrise was first released. I remember watching the movie for the first time around the early 2000s and it has been my favorite romance movie since then. The last time I had watched all three movies in the trilogy was back in 2014. The lock-down seemed like a great time to go back and revisit the trilogy and I have found that with time, my feelings and opinions about the movies have radically changed.
