It’s fall and the new line-up for this season’s anime has been out for a while.
I’ve started some, I’ve dropped some and I don’t plan to watch many. Please note that I have not added summer delayed anime to this list. That is because I have already talked about them on another blog post linked here.
But based on what I’ve seen to date, these are the anime I am excited about this season:
The Heike Story
Medium: Series
Genre: Historical
Release Date: 16th September 2021
Based on what little I have seen of this series, it’s setting up to be the best show of the season. In fact, I am even considering reading the epic me-self.
Still, the anime style itself would have made it a must-watch for the season.
The show tells the story of the Heike clan through the eyes of an orphan girl. There are some supernatural elements to it. But, it feels like the show sort of expects the audience to have some knowledge of the history of the Heike clan.
There are too many things happening to fast to too many characters. So, spending a bit of time on Wikipedia might elevate your viewing experience.
Digimon: Ghost Game
Medium: Series
Genre: Sci-Fi, Horror, Adventure
Release Date: 3rd October 2021
If you think this anime is going to be cruising on the nostalgia factor, then you are wrong. The first two episodes have been such a blast and the opening is fire. I promise you, the horror factor is unlike any other Digimon media you’ve seen. I mean this shit is legit creepy – like a perfect Halloween watch.
Even if you are not familiar with the franchise, you would not lose anything. Each new Digimon series is generally based on new universes. And the new characters provide a fresh take on this 20-year-old franchise.
Komi Can’t Communicate
Medium: Series
Genre: Comedy, Slice of Life
Release Date: 7th October 2021
I have not started this series yet but I have read and liked the manga. And it is a faithful adaptation of the source material. So I am pretty confident that the series will be as wholesome as the manga.
Besides the studio behind the anime is OLM who is well-known for Berserk, Odd Taxi, and all Pokemon movies. So I’ll be in good hands with this anime.
The anime follows Komi – a high school student with a social anxiety problem. But this new school year, she wants a fresh start and is set on making 100 friends.
Mieruko-chan
Medium: Series
Genre: Slice of Life, Horror
Release Date: 3rd October 2021
This anime follows Miko who’s all like “I see dead people”. But they sort of leave her alone if she ignores them completely. This show does this great job of combining horror and slice of life that works.
PSA: The show starts with a bit of fanservice but it stops after the first two episodes. So don’t drop it if this is the only gripe you have with it.
If you are assuming that the slice of life aspect would make the horror less horrifying, well, you’ll be wrong. This one includes proper horror. There is this sense of uneasiness is real with this one.
Deji Meets Girl
Medium: Short Series
Genre: Slice of Life
Release Date: 2nd October 2021
The location for this series is Okinawa!! I love animes/shows/movies based in Okinawa for some reason. The Non-non Biyori movie is one of my favorites so I am quite excited for this one.
This is a short series whose main selling point is the striking visual style. It has an almost retro-esque soft colour palette that is distinct and beauuuutiful. The show follows Maise who works for her family’s hotel. She meets a traveller from Tokyo who has the ability to make fantastic elements come to life.
If this premise seems intriguing to you, then definitely check out the show. Each episode is 2 minutes long – so it won’t be like a huge commitment either way.
Let’s Make a Mug Too Season 2
Medium: Series
Genre: Slice of Life
Release Date: 2nd October 2021
This series has been under-watched. More people need to get on this shit. The premise of this anime is well… the title. It’s one of those shows where nothing big happens. If that’s not something that appeals to you then this show might not be for you.
But this show is so wholesome and comfy and it makes me want to take up pottery. So, I am stoked that it is getting a second season.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Season 2
Medium: Series
Genre: Supernatural
Release Date: 10th October 2021
It’s … it’s Demon Slayer!! That’s all I am going to say. I mean, do you really need me to sell this to you?
